CRAWFORD COLLEGE LA LUCIA
ALUMNUS: Rachel Garbers
A passion for Education
Rachel Garbers lives the values of Crawford. Upon returning to South Africa at the beginning of 2005, Rachel had to complete both the Grade 11 and 12 syllabi, receiving the Platford Good Character Award at her Valedictory that year in recognition of her efforts. Rachel was also offered a bursary from PWC and completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Pretoria. She then went on to study towards her CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting while working as a junior accountant. A lifelong learner, Rachel also tackled year courses in Mathematics, French and Mandarin Chinese, which she enjoyed tremendously. Rachel obtained her PGCE Certificate from UNISA in 2014 and hopes to pursue a Masters and PhD in the coming years.
A firm believer in the principle of servant leadership and the importance of community outreach, Rachel has been involved in a number of welfare initiatives, amongst others teaching Mathematics to boys at a shelter, starting up a recycling service at a former school and organizing and running a 1st year student camp. She loves sharing her musical talent and being hands-on help in feeding the needy.
Rachel finds being involved with the youth most rewarding and this passion has led to her going back to schools. She taught at Crawford College North Coast for two years and is currently a locum teacher sharing her knowledge at various schools. Rachel is delighted at the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of her students. “It’s such a wonderful thing to be excited to go to work every morning,” Rachel says. “I feel very blessed and fortunate to share my passion for education with my students.”
