MATHS WIZARD AND PRINCIPAL EXTRAORDINAIRE

Alan Angel has had an impressive, rich and varied journey in education. He matriculated at Beachwood High School in 1988 and went on to complete a Higher Diploma in Education from Edgewood College of Education, in 1993.

Having loved his own school days and inspired by his teachers, he knew from a young age that he wanted to be a teacher. Initially his intentions were to be a High School teacher. This changed, after his first two years of Practical Teaching, as student teaching experience had to completed in a Primary School – he soon realised that this is where he wanted to be.

He started his teaching career, in 1994, as a Grade 6 Teacher, at Glenashley Senior Primary School teaching English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education.

Alan joined the Crawford family in 1999. From 1999-2004, he fulfilled a variety of roles which included being the Sports Coordinator, a Grade 5-7 Mathematics and Grade 5 English Teacher, as well as a Grade 5 and Grade 6 Register Teacher.

In January 2005, he joined the corporate world as a Sales Executive at Ubunye Uniforms, a national uniform supplier. Within 6 months, he was promoted to the role of KZN Branch Manager. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience but realized that he missed education and so re-joined the group in 2008 as a Sports Coordinator at Crawford College La Lucia. In 2009, he was appointed as a Deputy Principal at Crawford Preparatory La Lucia and he taught Grade 7 Mathematics and Grade 7 Life-Skills.

Alan is an avid sportsman and enjoyed all sports from an early age. He represented Natal Primary Schools in Cricket in 1983. Other sporting milestones included being the Captain of the South African Colleges Cricket team in 1992 and 1993, being selected for Natal Colts (U23) Cricket team in 1991 and 1993, being selected for the South African Students’ Cricket Team that toured Zimbabwe and Kenya in 1994 and he was a member of the South African U23 Action Cricket team in 1993, to name just a few.

Alan’s passion lies in inspiring pupils and developing their self-belief and talents, ensuring that they feel cared for and helping them to be the best that they can be. He is continuously looking at ways to improve the Crawford product and its offering. He has a very strong work ethic and is actively involved in the school and all related activities.

In 2012 Alan was selected for ADvTECH’s MDP (Management Development Program) and in 2013 he was asked to act as the Principal of Crawford Preparatory La Lucia, whilst the school’s Principal, Mr Owen Kuyper, was on secondment to Head Office.

Alan has developed strong leadership and communication skills and this, together with his attention to detail, commitment and caring personality, made him very well-suited to lead Crawford Preparatory La Lucia. In July 2013, he was appointed as the Principal of Crawford Preparatory La Lucia.

As a way of keeping a healthy balance between work and home life, Alan enjoys reading, watching and playing sport, keeping fit and going to the gym. He is a family man and loves nothing more than to spend time with his wife Cheri and their two children Jade (15) and Damien (10).
